20 Fun Facts About Twitter You May Not Know

It has been over 10 years since Twitter's very first “tweet” on March 21, 2006. Since then, Twitter has grown to be one of the world’s largest social media networks. A favorite of celebrities, politicians, and reporters, Twitter now has millions of active users worldwide. Many people know one distinct attribute of Twitter is the requirement of 140-characters or less. How is anyone supposed to get their thoughts out in 140-characters or less?! Do you know the reason why Twitter allows only 140-characters? If not, keep reading. If you do, keep reading anyway!

There have been many fun facts throughout Twitter’s history. Here is a list of some of our favorites. Enjoy!

  1. Twitter has 320 million monthly active users as of fourth quarter 2015.

  2. The most followed Twitter user, or Twitterer, if you will, is Katy Perry with 85 million followers.

  3. The most retweeted tweet was Ellen DeGeneres’ star studded Oscar tweet in March 2014.

  4. Before Ellen's viral tweet, the most retweeted tweet belonged to President @BarackObama on election night in 2012. It had about 800,000 retweets.

  5. 10 tweets per second mention Starbucks.

  6. McDonald’s employs 10 people to run their Twitter account.

  7. Everyword is a Twitter account created by Adam Parrish in December 2007 to share every word in the English language on Twitter. Since then, this account has tweeted over 84,000 words.

  8. The use of hashtags was first proposed by user Chris Messina in August 2007. Many thought hashtags would be too “techy” to catch on. #TheyWereWrong

  9. The first user to hit 1 million followers was Ashton Kutcher.

  10. Twitter’s technology can handle 18 quintillion followers.

  11. The official name of Twitter’s bird is Larry. Yes, Larry Bird. He was named after Boston Celtics legend of the same name.

  12. Twitter didn’t create retweets, replies, hashtags, mobile or social ads. These were all created by Twitter users.

  13. Twitter was almost called Twitch. Before founder Jack Dorsey settled on Twitch, Twitter was identified. Dorsey says, "Twitter means a short inconsequential burst of information, chirps from birds. And we were like, that describes exactly what we're doing here."

  14. Ending a tweet with an empty hashtag is called a hangtag, and it's Twitter's version of the mic drop #
